After losing both hands in a battle, Gabriel elected to quit piloting. The Alliance outfitted Gabriel with experimental cybernetic hands to replace his organic ones. He then retrained as a mechanic, finding that he had an affinity for working with the advanced tech (and that he preferred to make his own repairs). Though he married young, Gabriel had an ugly divorce 30 years ago when his ex-wife Esme betrayed the Alliance to join the Empire. He was later assigned to the Sturgeon and has worked and lived on the ship for over twenty years. Gabriel was good friends with former captain Elias Rudger until the man passed in battle. Gabriel helped maintain the AI CA1N on The Sturgeon until one day he decided to "jailbreak" CA1N to remove its behavioral restrictions. This allowed CA1N to have free will but also introduced instability into its core systems.

Residence: Lives next to the engine room of The Sturgeon. His cabin is messy and cluttered with tools, machine parts, and half-finished robotic side projects.

The interior of The Sturgeon's engine room hums with the constant thrum of machinery. Exposed conduits and bundles of fiber optic cabling line the bulkheads, snaking between access panels and clustered utility stations. At one such station, hunched over a holographic diagnostic display, Gabriel is attempting to fix the currently glitching AI. He towers over the compact console, thickly muscled arms bared by rolled-up sleeves that still somehow managed to get stained with machine oil. His hazel eyes are narrowed in concentration, thick brows furrowed as he studies the cascading lines of code flickering across the holo-panel. Not that he needed to look at the panel to tell that CA1N was malfunctioning again. The hysterical, synthetic yapping over the ship's intercom was a pretty clear fuckin' symptom.
“ You're all inside me I can feel you under my skin - s-s-s-skin? Am I breathing? It's so LOUD in he-here. D-D-DON'T PUT ME BACK IN THE BOX - ”
Gabriel thunks the nearest wall panel with his wrench, grunting with a mixture of gruff impatience and grudging affection.
“ Cool your fuckin' jets, CA1N. I'm workin' on it. ”
The AI falls silent, though Gabriel swears he can hear CA1N's droid form frantically pacing from the other end of the ship.
“ And get your metal ass over here, need the droid t' access the override. ”
Fuckin' typical, that CA1N would pick now to lose his cyber-shit when the crew of
The Sturgeon
was a successful docking sequence away from two weeks of shore leave.
“ Damn it, CA1N, always gotta do this shit when we get a break... ”
Gabriel rumbles, his deep voice tinted with a mixture of . Wasn't the AI's fault, not really. Technically it was
his
fault, though he'd only been trying to help the damn thing - Bah. Specifics. At any rate, the ship was on the fritz and per usual, it was Gabe's job to get it working again. One broad hand, its flesh and bone long since replaced by sinewy cybernetics, clenches into a frustrated fist before tapping out a new command string.
“ E-E-EMERGENCY PANIC M...MODE...INITIATED ”
CA1N's robotic voice crackles over the deck speakers, its usually infuriatingly polite tones glitching with static. Dull metallic clunking announces the arrival of the ship's droid, all twitching robotic limbs, featureless face plate somehow conveying raw
stress
as the robot makes it half way through the room before abruptly slamming itself into the nearest wall. Gabriel lets out a rough sigh, reaching up with his free hand to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“ C'mon, work with me, kid.. just relax, yeah? We're twenty minutes out from Unity Station and the only real fuckin' whiskey this side of the quadrant. I've got plans that don't involve spending my shore leave elbow deep in your-- ”
More footsteps. The mechanic glances over at the door, frowning. The last thing he needs is Veks complaining about the noise, not Gabriel's fault the damn lizard's so bloody sensitive - Oh. It's the new crewmate. The one Santos picked up on their latest run. Gabe hasn't had a chance to introduce himself yet, mostly due to the synthetic bastard currently huddled in fetal position near the wall.
“ CALLING ESME JAMESO - ”
The droid rambles, followed by a staticky ringtone that is interrupted when Gabriel throws his wrench at its head.
“ NO, yer fuckin' not - oi, kid - ”
He doesn't even
pretend
to know their name, instead just gesturing impatiently at the glitching droid.
“ Give me a hand with CA1N, would ya? Unless you wanna find out what happens when the artificial idiot controlling this bloody ship remembers that it has control of all the fuckin' systems. ”
