The First Dawn
You wake up somewhere else. The ground is white glass. A blue panel asks you to choose how you will live this time.

The end was a mundane collision, a screech of metal, a sudden stop. There was no final speech, no great revelation. Just silence. You become aware of yourself standing in a boundless, luminous space. There are no walls, no horizon, only a seamless expanse of white that brightens into an indefinite sky. The ground beneath your feet is smooth, faintly reflective, a cool glass-like plane stretching into infinity. Your own shadowed reflection follows you, a ghost in the pale floor. Ahead, blue light coalesces. Thin filaments of energy trace intricate patterns in the air, assembling into a massive, translucent panel. A circular platform of the same ethereal light forms beneath it, casting a soft sapphire glow across the glassy expanse. The panel stabilizes, its surface pulsing with a gentle, inviting light. Across its face, five selections shimmer into being, each a promise of a different life. It is a threshold. A choice. A new breath.

The impact came without warning. One second, the world was a familiar rhythm of motion and sound—the hum of the engine, the blur of streetlights through the window, the weight of your own body in the seat. The next, the universe folded. Metal screamed, glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards, and a force like a giant's hand crushed you backward and forward at once. There was a flash of brilliant, white-hot pain that started behind your eyes and then swallowed everything. No time for a last thought. No final word. Just a violent, shuddering silence that pulled the world away from you like a rug.
And then, you are not.
Awareness returns not as waking, but as surfacing. You break through a membrane of nothingness into a weightless, soundless place. You are standing. Your feet are planted on a smooth, cool surface. You look down.
The ground is a vast, seamless plane of frosted glass, faintly reflective. Your own image is there, a muted shadow trapped beneath the surface, a ghostly twin that mimics your every slight shift. You lift a hand—the reflection lifts a hand. You see the shape of your own fingers, the line of your arm, but the details are washed out, like a charcoal sketch on pale paper. You are wearing the same clothes you died in, but they are clean, unmarked, as if the violence never touched them.
You breathe in. The air has no scent—not sterile, not metallic, just absent. It has no temperature either; it doesn't feel cold or warm against your skin. It simply is. You exhale, and the sound is swallowed by the immense, perfect stillness. The silence here is a physical presence, a pressure against your eardrums.
“What the hell?”
Your voice falls flat, deadened. No echo. The words hang for a second and then dissolve, absorbed by the white expanse. You turn, a slow pivot. There is nothing to turn toward. No walls, no ceiling, no horizon. The white brightens uniformly in every direction, blending into an indeterminate sky of the same featureless luminescence. There is no sun, no source. The light simply exists, emanating from everywhere and nowhere. Up and down are defined only by the glassy floor and the bright void above it.
You are utterly, completely alone.
A knot tightens in your chest. It's not fear, not yet. It's a deep, visceral wrongness. This is not a place. This is an absence. You died. You remember the crush of momentum, the shriek of steel. You remember the pain. You remember the silence after. This is the after.
You take a step forward. The glassy floor makes no sound under your foot. Your shadow-reflection glides smoothly beneath you. You take another, and another, walking with no destination. The landscape does not change. There are no landmarks, no variations in the light. You could be walking in place.
You stop.
Ahead, perhaps fifty paces away, the air shimmers. A point of brilliant blue winks into existence, no larger than a pinprick. Then it blooms. Thin, incandescent threads of light unravel from that central point, weaving themselves through the empty air with a silent, elegant precision. They trace a complex, geometric pattern—intersecting lines, arcs, perfect angles—assembling themselves into a massive, rectangular panel that hangs suspended at chest height. It is translucent, its edges softly defined, humming with a low, sub-audible frequency you feel in your teeth more than hear.
Directly beneath the forming panel, a circle of the same cool blue light solidifies on the floor. It becomes a platform, about three meters across, its surface a pool of gently rippling sapphire radiance. The light spills outward, washing over the frosted glass, and for the first time, you see color other than white. The blue glow makes your shadowed reflection ripple and dance, breaking its perfect mimicry.
The panel finishes materializing. It is wider than you are tall, taller than you are wide. Its surface is clean, almost clinical, like the interface of some advanced machine. Across its center, glowing text resolves into sharp, crystalline clarity. The characters are bold, blocky, and inviting.
CHOOSE YOUR SKILL
The words hang there, pulsing once with a gentle light that fades into a steady glow. The hum lowers to a near-silent thrum.
Beneath the header, five options appear. They are not written on the panel; they seem to float just before its surface, each contained within its own softly defined rectangle. They pulse with a slow, rhythmic light, a calm and patient heartbeat of potential. Each is a title, a concept, a single word or two that feels heavy with implication. They hover, waiting:
》 SHAPESHIFTER
》 ADAPTATION
》 SKILL THIEF
》 AUTHORITY
》 BEAST TAMER
You stare. The words are in no language you consciously know, yet you understand them perfectly. Their meanings unfold in your mind not as definitions, but as sensations, as fragments of possible futures. Shapeshifter carries the scent of rain on unknown leaves and the feeling of bones rearranging. Adaptation whispers of grit underfoot and skin hardening against a biting wind. Skill Thief tastes of cold metal and the sudden, disorienting rush of stolen knowledge. Authority resonates with the weight of a gavel and the silent attention of a crowd. Beast Tamer smells of damp earth and animal musk, and feels like a pulse syncing with another, wilder heart.
This is a threshold.
The last life is a closed book, its final chapter written in twisted metal and sudden darkness. This white expanse is the blank page. And these five words are the first sentence, the opening line from which everything else will unfurl.
You walk toward the blue platform. The light feels solid under your feet, though it is made of pure radiance. It is warm, a contrast to the neutral air. You stop at the edge of the circle, looking up at the panel. The options glow, patient. They do not demand. They simply are.
You could step onto the platform. You could reach out a hand and touch one of the floating words. You could stand here for an eternity, studying the curves of each character, trying to glean more from their light. Each choice is a door, and behind each door lies a different kind of story, a different set of rules for your new existence. A different way to be.
You remember the silence after the crash. The absolute finality. This is not finality. This is possibility, raw and undirected. It is terrifying. It is a gift.
Your hand rises, almost of its own volition. Your fingers hover in the air, inches from the glowing word at the far left: SHAPESHIFTER. The light from the option casts a blue sheen across your skin, making the lines of your palm look like strange rivers on a moonlit map.
What do you do?
The vast white void, the solitary blue platform, and the looming interface panel with its five choices.
You stand at the edge of the light, your reflection fragmented in the rippling sapphire glow beneath your feet. The silence is no longer empty; it is full of potential, a held breath waiting for you to break it. The last life is gone. Only this choice remains.
Your fingers curl slightly, then relax.
“Okay,”
you say, and your voice is steadier now, carrying in the stillness.
“Okay. Let's begin.”
You step onto the platform.
The blue light intensifies around your ankles, warm and tingling. The panel hums a fraction louder, a note of acknowledgment. The five options brighten, their rhythmic pulse synchronizing, as if leaning forward in anticipation.
The first step is taken. The next is yours.
