You died. You open your eyes not to light, but to a profound and velvety dark. Five enormous cards hang suspended before you, each taller than a man, their edges glowing with a soft, ethereal luminescence. They float in perfect silence. A voice, neither male nor female and seeming to come from everywhere at once, resonates through the chamber. It explains the rules: five rolls will decide your race, your origin, your talent, your magical affinity, and a unique gift. The possibilities are endless—a life of privilege or penury, of legendary power or cursed obscurity. You are allowed a single reroll. After seeing all five results, you may permanently replace one. The replacement is final, and there is no guarantee it will be an improvement. It is the only gamble you are permitted before your new existence begins. The cards begin to spin. The weight of the decision settles in your chest. An entire world of magic, kingdoms, and unknown adventures awaits on the other side of this moment. But first, you must learn who you are going to be.

The last thing you remember is the crunch of metal, the violent splintering of glass, the world folding into a final, blunt pressure. Then silence. A silence so absolute it has its own weight.
Now, you are here.
You open your eyes to a darkness that isn't empty. It is a thick, cool velvet pressing against your skin, your eyelids, the inside of your mouth. It has no temperature and every temperature at once. Before you, five rectangles hang suspended in the void. Calling them cards is a courtesy; they are monoliths, each taller than you could reach, their surfaces a matte black so deep it seems to swallow the faint, sourceless light that limns their razor-straight edges. They float in a shallow arc, motionless. Waiting.
A voice resonates. It does not travel through the air. It vibrates in the marrow of your ribs, in the fillings of your teeth if you still have teeth. It is calm. Measured. Utterly devoid of gender.
“Welcome,”
it says,
“to your next life.”
The first slab shudders. A sound like continental plates grinding emanates from it, deep and resonant in the featureless dark. It pivots on an unseen axis, turning with the gravity of a falling mountain. On its face, a script ignites—a radiant, burning gold that sears itself into the black: RACE . The word holds for three of your heartbeats, which you realize you still have, then dissolves like embers on a night wind. The card is blank again, but expectant. A stage set.
The second turns. ORIGIN .
The third. TALENT .
The fourth. AFFINITY .
A pause stretches. It thickens the dark, makes it viscous. The fifth card rotates slowly, as if resisting its own motion. UNIQUE GIFT .
As the final designation fades, the edges of all five cards brighten. Their soft glow intensifies, stabilizes into a steady, pulsing gold that beats in time with something you can't name.
“Everything,”
the voice announces, its tone shifting from statement to ceremony,
“about your new beginning will be decided by these five rolls.”
Around you, the darkness ripples. Not like water. Like the surface of a deep, black pond disturbed by a thrown stone. Images flash into being and are gone before you can grasp them. An elf, her hair the color of winter moonlight, her fingers weaving light into runes before a tree made of crystal and sorrow. A child, human, all ribs and frantic eyes, sprinting through a forest where the shadows have teeth and intent. A figure armored in scales of bronze and crimson stands on a dais, addressing a sea of young faces in a stone amphitheater that smells of ozone and ambition. A crib in a room where the walls sweat a dark, sluggish fluid.
They vanish. The silence returns, deeper now for having been broken.
A wry, tired smile finds your lips. It feels foreign there.
Your voice, when you find it, is a small, dry thing in the immense dark.
“So I just keep rolling until I get what I want?”
The voice laughs. It is a dry, rustling sound, like pages turning in a tomb.
“No.”
A sixth card manifests to the right of the others. It is smaller, but its presence is no less absolute. A single line of text glows upon its face: REROLLS AVAILABLE: 1 .
Your smile dies.
“Explain.”
“You will receive five results,”
the voice states, all trace of amusement gone, replaced by a neutrality as cold and hard as polished stone.
“After seeing them, in their entirety, you may replace exactly one. You will select the category. A new result for that category will be generated.”
“And if the new one is worse?”
The question leaves a cold trail in your throat.
“It is yours.”
“Can I have the old one back?”
“No.”
“That feels unnecessarily cruel.”
“We prefer the term definitive,”
the voice replies, and you catch the faintest return of that arid dryness.
Five enormous cards hang in a featureless void, their edges glowing with a soft, pulsing gold light.
Before you can form another protest, the five primary cards begin to spin. Not quickly at first. They turn with a ponderous, grinding reluctance. Then faster. Their black surfaces blur, becoming disks of deeper darkness edged in gold. As they whirl, words and symbols flash across them—too fast to read, but you catch impressions burned into your vision: Common. Rare. Epic. Legendary. Cursed. Unknown.
For a single, heart-stopping instant, one of the cards—you cannot tell which—displays not text, but a pair of shifting, chaotic question marks: ???
Your stomach plummets. Somewhere, beyond this dimensionless chamber, a world waits. A world of soaring spires and deep dungeons, of spellcraft and steel, of friendships forged in desperate alleys and rivalries born in sunlit courtyards. A world with a history, a geography, a politics, a thousand stories already in motion. But the door through which you will enter that world, the body you will wear, the first chapter of your story scribed in your very bones—all of it hinges on what is about to appear on these five spinning slabs.
The whirling slows. The deceleration is agonizing. The cards settle, their edges once again emitting that steady, patient glow. They hang before you, inert. Their faces are turned away. The revealed categories—RACE, ORIGIN, TALENT, AFFINITY, UNIQUE GIFT—are gone, absorbed back into the void. They are blank slates awaiting their inscription.
You realize you have been holding your breath. You let it out, a shallow sound in the perfect quiet.
The voice speaks again, closer now, intimate, as if it is standing just behind your left ear.
“Ready to find out who you're going to be?”
It does not wait for an answer.
The first card—the one that had borne the word RACE —begins, with infinite slowness, to turn over. The grinding sound returns, lower this time, more visceral. The black back of the card rotates away from you. The new face is still dark, but a light is gathering at its center, coalescing from the void.
A single word begins to form, the letters stitching themselves out of motes of golden light. It is not a category this time. It is a result. The first fundamental truth of your new existence.
The first enormous card turns with a deep, grinding sound, a single word forming from golden light at its center.
You lean forward, though you have no body to lean with. The dark feels colder. The word resolves.
It reads: HUMAN .
The letters pulse once, solidifying. A simple, common result. The card stops moving. The light stabilizes. You stare at the word. Human. It carries a weight of mundane possibility. No hidden grace of elves, no draconic resilience, no spectral ambiguity. Just human.
Before you can fully absorb it, the second card— ORIGIN —begins its turn. It moves faster than the first, with a sharper, more decisive sound. The light at its center blooms immediately, writing its verdict in a swift, sure hand.
FOUNDLING .
Foundling. Not an orphan with a known grave, but a thing discovered. Left somewhere. Your past in this new world begins with an absence.
The second card reveals the word FOUNDLING in stark, golden letters against the dark.
The third card spins before the second has fully settled. TALENT . The light here is different—not a steady script, but a shimmering, cascading series of symbols that finally collapse into a single, brutal designation: E-RANK .
E-Rank. Low. So low it scrapes the bottom of whatever scale governs such things. The card seems to dim slightly after displaying it, as if embarrassed.
A cold knot tightens beneath your ribs. Human. Foundling. E-Rank Talent. The skeleton of a life is assembling itself, and it looks fragile.
The fourth card turns. AFFINITY . The light swirls, chaotic, forming and re-forming symbols you cannot comprehend. It finally settles on two words: SHADOW MANIPULATION .
Shadow Manipulation. It sounds like a thing done in alleys, in corners, away from the light. It fits the dim outline you have so far.
The fourth card displays the words SHADOW MANIPULATION in a chaotic, swirling script.
There is one card left. UNIQUE GIFT . It does not move. The pause is longer than any before it. The silence becomes a physical presence, a weight on your shoulders. The voice says nothing. The other four cards glow, their results fixed, undeniable.
Finally, with a sound like a sigh, the fifth card turns. It is slow, agonizing. The light at its center does not gather. It sputters. It flickers between gold and a sickly, pale green. The letters that form are jagged, uneven, as if scratched into the surface by a desperate hand.
They spell: CURSE OF PERCEIVED INSIGNIFICANCE .
You read it twice. Curse of Perceived Insignificance. The words hang there, ugly and confounding. A gift that is a curse. A unique thing that makes you uniquely forgettable.
All five cards now display their verdicts. HUMAN. FOUNDLING. E-RANK. SHADOW MANIPULATION. CURSE OF PERCEIVED INSIGNIFICANCE. They hang in the dark, a portrait of a life that seems designed to be overlooked, to struggle, to exist in the margins.
A bitter taste floods your mouth. You swallow against it.
The sixth card, the one that reads REROLLS AVAILABLE: 1 , glows more brightly, as if reminding you of its presence. Your single chance to change one piece of this.
The voice returns, its neutrality untouched by the results displayed.
“Your hand is dealt. You have one reroll. Which card will you risk?”
It does not offer counsel. It simply waits. The five results stare back at you, each a foundational pillar of a life yet to be lived. To change one is to gamble the entire structure.
{{user}} stands before the illuminated monoliths, the silence of the void pressing in, a single choice burning in the dark.
